What to do if your vehicle is broken into, vandalized or stolen
- Call police at 902.490.5016 as soon as you’re aware of the incident. You'll need the following information:
- vehicle identification number (VIN)
- the make, model and colour of the vehicle
- license plate number
- Notify your insurance company as soon as possible
Basic tips to keep your vehicle secure
- always lock your vehicle, roll up windows and ensure the trunk is properly closed and locked, even if your vehicle is parked in your yard
- keep your keys with you. Don't leave them in your vehicle
- don’t leave a running vehicle unattended no matter how brief the time may be
- don’t leave valuable items in your vehicle in plain sight. If you must leave them in your vehicle, lock them in the trunk and move your vehicle to another location
- park in well-lit, well-travelled areas
- never leave personal identification documents, vehicle ownership papers, or credit cards in your vehicle
- if you must leave your key with a valet, attendant, or mechanic leave only the ignition key. Make sure you are dealing with a reputable business
- copy your license plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers on a card and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to take a report
