Overview:
The Accessibility Advisory Committee provides advice to the Executive Standing Committee on the municipal policies, programs, and services which impact persons with disabilities. The mandate of the Committee is to assist the HRM in making the municipality more accessible and barrier-free.
Objectives/Functions:
- Advise Regional Council, through the Executive Standing Committee, on all matters related to the status of persons with disabilities;
- Review existing and proposed by-laws of Council to promote participation of persons with disabilities in their communities;
- Provide guidance and support for all municipal business units regarding issues and concerns of persons with disabilities;
- Review existing and proposed municipal facilities and services to make sure they are accessible; and
- Advise Regional Council, the Executive Standing Committee, municipal business units, and the public about strategies that support accessibility.
Membership: Eleven (11) members as follows:
- Six (6) persons with disabilities
- Two (2) community members, including parents and advocates
- Up to three (3) members of Council

- One (1) community member, including parents and advocates
Term Length:
- Two (2) years
