The Inclusion Support Advisory Group will be a volunteer team of residents from all over the Halifax region that will be responsible for leading the development of the Inclusion Support Analysis and Evaluation in Parks & Recreation and will help to ensure that the key priorities accurately reflect the needs of the disability community in the municipality.

The advisory group will consist of a mixed group of persons with disabilities, parents of persons with disabilities and service providers of persons with disabilities. This group will help in the following:

  • the creation of a municipality-wide survey
  • analyzing of data to determine key issues
  • providing recommendations that will make up the final plan

Recruitment information

We are looking for 8-12 people to make up an advisory group to lead the development of the Inclusion Support Analysis and Evaluation. Each member will be expected to attend monthly meetings (outside of July and August) through to the end of 2025. Childcare can be provided, if needed. We are looking for representation from:

  • persons with disabilities
  • parents of children and youth with disabilities
  • service providers of persons with disabilities

Rationale for the committee

The Inclusion Support Advisory Group will be a volunteer team of residents from across the Halifax region that will help inform the development of the Inclusion Support Analysis and Evaluation in Recreation Programming. They will help to ensure that key priorities of the analysis accurately reflect the needs of the disability community.

Scope of the committee
  1. Advise the Recreation Programming Inclusion & Accessibility team on matters relating to: 
    1. First person perspective regarding access to recreation programs
    2. Needs of the community related to disability support and inclusivity in recreation programming
  2. Provide an inclusive lens to the development of community engagement sessions and a public survey to gather further information related to inclusion support in municipal recreation programming
  3. Assist in development of promising practices regarding inclusive recreation at municipal rec centres
  4. Contribute to the creation of an evaluation tool for Inclusive programs
Out of scope
  1. Any operational changes related to internal processes or hiring (e.g. municipal charter, labor laws, union contracts etc.)
  2. Activities that are contrary to the municipality's mission and charter
  3. Revision to other municipal strategies (e.g. Accessibility Strategy)
  4. Changes to other disability support or inclusion programs not operated by the municipality (i.e. schools, health care)
  5. Facilities and built environment changes (parks, playgrounds, and buildings)
Membership

The group will consist of up to 12 members of the community and three municipal employees. The majority of the participants will be either people with disabilities or parents of people with disabilities.

Meetings

Mandatory meetings will be held monthly outside of the months of July and August for the period of up to nine months. There may be additional meetings, however participation is voluntary. The meeting locations and platform will be determined by the selected group.
